Does Town of Islip take grass clippings? ›

A limit of six (6) items will be taken on either household collection day. Grass clippings are not accepted curbside at any time. Unlimited Yard Waste Collections occur in the Spring, Fall & Winter. Please refer to the “Garbage/Recycling Schedule” of the “How Do I” tab on www.islipny.gov for you collection schedule.

Recyclables are picked up curbside from Islip residences and brought to the Multi-Purpose Recycling Facility (MRF) also known as the WRAP Center located on Lincoln Avenue in Holbrook. The employees at the facility regularly sort the material and remove contaminants such as garbage, Styrofoam and plastic bags.

All pails and garbage must be placed out for collection prior to 6:00 a.m. on the scheduled day and weigh no more than 50 lbs. each. Use one unobstructed curbside location in front of your home.

There are some circ*mstances when collecting your grass clippings is warranted. If you see signs of lawn disease, pick up the clippings to avoid spreading the problem. Grass clippings can also be collected for use in a compost pile or as mulch, unless you recently applied a weed control product to the lawn.

Using clippings as mulch

In general, putting mulch around flowers, vegetables, shrubs and trees helps reduce weeds, conserve moisture and moderate soil temperatures. Grass clippings are a good mulch option with a few conditions: Do not apply more than 1 or 2 inches of grass clippings at one time. Use dry clippings.

We won't collect your recycling if it contains anything that can't be recycled. This includes black bin bags, textiles, electricals, nappies or food. Please make sure you: rinse and empty all containers.

Empty containers of paint (regardless of type) and chemicals can be disposed of in the general household waste bin. Leave the lid off so the refuse collection crews can see they are empty.

Knowing what goes into each bin is crucial for the recycling process. Blue bins accept items like paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, glass jars, and metal cans. Before placing items in the blue bin, ensure they are clean and dry. Contaminants like food residue can spoil entire batches of recyclables.

When we throw garbage, we should make sure it falls inside the bin and not in the surrounding area. Or else this situation can cause the spreading of diseases.

What can you do with all the garbage that you have? ›

Donate to a charity. Some of it that is usable is given to other people or I might reuse it myself if I can. Other waste is composted and anything that can't or shouldn't be composted is taken to a transfer center (at least here where I live) and it is hauled to a landfill.

This item is not collected from the curb or accepted at Peel Community Recycling Centres. Leave grass clippings on top of the grass after you've mowed the lawn. This is called grasscycling. Grasscycling takes less effort, helps produce a healthy lawn and benefits you, your community and the environment.
